The curriculum at More House begins
with a broad range of subjects, including a full range
of Creative and Performing Arts. This is then used
as a foundation for gradual specialisation at GCSE
and A Level. Although we follow the National Curriculum
in the widest sense, we also make full use of our
independence to ensure that courses are appropriate
to the needs of our pupils in terms of challenge and
breadth. The girls are encouraged to set high standards
for themselves, and to strive to be the best that
they can be in every aspect of their lives. The atmosphere
here is one high in challenge but low in stress, because
we believe that this is most conducive to developing
both immediate success and a long term love of learning.
We believe in encouraging young people to grow rather
than forcing them to do so and thus we produce more
enduring progress.
The First Three Years
Classes are kept deliberately small - no more than
20 - to allow the girls to benefit from a high level
of teacher time. A wide range of subjects are studied
during this time, to build a firm foundation for GCSE
and A Level success. In general all girls study the
following: Art, Biology, Chemistry, Drama, English
(Language and Literature), Geography, German, History,
Information Technology, Latin, Mathematics, Music,
PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education), Physical
Education, Physics, Religious Studies. In addition
to French, girls may also study a classical subject
in the form of Latin or Classical Civilisation. Bilingual
girls are also encouraged to continue to study their
own language with a view to taking a GCSE in this
early in their career in the School.
Years 10 - 11: The GCSE Years
Classes remain small, normally in the range of 5 -
15 pupils. Generally More House girls study 10 GCSE
subjects, although some will study 8 or 9, whilst
others will study 11. The Core Subjects are: English
Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science
(Dual Award) and Religious Studies. All girls usually
study at least one Modern Foreign Language. Girls
then supplement their Core Subjects with subjects
drawn from this list: Art, Drama, German, Geography,
History, Latin, Music, Physical Education, Spanish.
Your daughter will also continue to follow a PSHE
programme to support the pastoral life of the School
and will take part in the General Physical Education
programme.
