Art work is to be found displayed everywhere in the
School, and this reflects not only the extra-ordinarily
high standard of the pupils' work but also the creativity
which pervades the life of our School. Our two Art
Studios provide the space necessary for the girls
to explore their ideas using the techniques of fine
art, modelling, graphic design, computer-aided design,
photography and textiles.
Textiles itself is offered as separate subject in
the VIth Form but the techniques used in this discipline
are to be found throughout the Art teaching further
down the School. More House girls regularly go on
to study design and fashion design at some of the
best institutions in the world, including the London
School of Fashion. Also offered at VIth Form level
is History of Art, thus offering the possibility of
a completely Art and Design oriented VIth Form course.

This Art Department has easy access to some of the
best Art and Design collections in the world - the
V & A is 10 minutes walk from our door - and full
use is made of this advantage. Your daughter would
also benefit from the various innovative projects
the Art Department undertakes with organisations such
as the Wallace Collection, and when in the senior
part of the School, she would have the opportunity
to practise Life Drawing. Our girls regularly go on
to study Art at the highest level at the best institutions,
such as London's Central St Martins.

More details for pupils about
Art, Design & Textiles
The main purpose of the Art and Design course at More
House is to develop your ability to appreciate the
visual world - our natural environment and our achievements
within it - responding to that in a personal and creative
way.
Art, Craft and Design at More House covers a broad
range of activities.
At More House we work in 2 and 3 dimensions; painting
and drawing in a variety of media, making reliefs
and sculptures using papers, glue, string, wire, plaster
and clay etc. We also produce textile work including
batik and silk painted items. Various printing techniques
are also covered. Visits to museums and galleries
such as the V&A and the Royal Academy are arranged
in relation to schoolwork.
Our aim is to develop your understanding, knowledge,
skills and abilities so that you are confident and
able to do the work you aspire to in a way that you
are comfortable with. Some of you will be fortunate
to have a natural aptitude for art; for others there
are skills and techniques to be learned to enable
you to express yourself adequately - the teachers
are here to provide guidance and assistance.

Once you are in Year 9 you will be thinking carefully
about the next stage of your school life: the GCSEs
you would like to take. Some people choose Art simply
because they enjoy it; others do it because they are
wondering whether they might be interested in a career
for which a background in art is relevant or essential.
The GCSE, AS and A2 level board that the Art Department
works with is Edexcel. It is London based and we are
able to get moderators to come to school to assess
the course and examination work you produce for the
certificate. The course is rigorous, enabling and
energising, which combined with your personal motivation
can be a recipe for satisfaction and success. Many
girls from More House have progressed to various Art
Schools, some through undertaking the combined subjects
of Art & Design and Textiles for A level.
