CLASSICS

The aim of the Classics department at More House is to give pupils an insight into various aspects of the ancient world: its language and literature, history and culture. The emphasis is always on the relevance of these areas to the world today.

Latin

Latin is introduced in Year 7 and is taught to everybody for three years. Girls choose whether to continue Latin up to GCSE and on to A level. Small class sizes ensure individual attention and the best possible working atmosphere for girls to reach their full potential. Our results in public examinations are always high; last year all girls scored A*, A or B at GCSE and pupils gained places for Classics degrees at Oxford, Durham and Leeds universities.

Classical Civilisation

Classical Civilisation is the study of the literature, drama and art of the ancient world using no Latin or Greek. It is therefore available to all girls, regardless of whether or not they have taken a classical subject at GCSE. It has proved to be a very popular and successful choice for girls wishing to broaden their curriculum at A level.

Activities and Visits

Londinium was the centre of Roman Britain and has a wealth of resources to bring to life the teaching of Classics. We organise regular visits to museums, lectures and Greek plays, both in London and further afield. Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 have enjoyed trips to the Roman Baths, the Roman palace at Fishbourne, Hadrian's wall in Northumberland and St. Alban’s. We organise a trip to Greece for the Sixth Form.
