Years 8-11
Girls are taught in ability sets. This
allows the more able students to work at a faster rate
and the weaker students can benefit from increased personal
attention in smaller classes. Girls will be prepared
for IGCSE Mathematics, which provides a well balanced
syllabus and a sound grounding for Mathematics at a
higher level.
A Level
A-level Mathematics is always a popular choice at
More House and some girls choose to study Further Maths.
Students proceed to a broad range of courses such as
Architecture, Physics, Computer Science, Economics,
Law and Mathematics at many universities around Britain
and abroad including Oxford, London, Nottingham, Bristol,
Bath and Colorado.
Resources
The Mathematics Department has a specialist room
with computer, projector and screen. In addition there
is mathematics software available for the girls' use
on the More House computer network and the pupils are
encouraged to refer to a selection of useful websites.
Other Activities
More House takes part in the Hans Woyda Mathematics
Competition, a contest against sixty-four schools in
the Greater London area. In the past we have been placed
as high as second and we have an enthusiastic team this
year with their hopeful eyes on glory.
Students are also encouraged to participate in the UK
Mathematical Challenge which runs at Junior, Intermediate
and Senior levels. This gives them a chance to stretch
their abilities by considering some unusual conundrums.
Annually the Sixth Form have the chance to visit the
University of London for lectures which are designed
to enlighten students about the wide variety of areas
to which mathematics can be applied. This year the topics
include: "Juggling - Theory and Practice",
"Rock Guitar - a Mathematical Adventure",
"Maths goes to the Movies" and "Heart
Attacks Can Give You Mathematics".
