Using them regularly in you work is one of the best ways to learn them.Understanding God in Christianity In Christianity God is understood in a variety of ways. For example, in the Old Testament many people see God as someone who is a warrior-like figure, driving out God's enemies from the land of Israel and punishing the wicked for their sins. On the other hand in the New Testament God is said to be a much calmer figure, teaching people, through Jesus, the importance of showing love to each other. God is even spoken of as 'Our Father' which Jews and Muslims would find difficult to agree with. Many Christians believe in God as Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit). This is a complex idea to try and grasp but basically it is the belief that the Father, Son (Jesus) and Holy Spirit, despite all being individual persons, go together to make up the One God. Christianity is still understood to be a monotheistic religion despite the fact that there are three members of the Holy Trinity. Tip: One way of trying to understand the Trinity is illustrated here: It is not 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 but is more like 1 x 1 x 1 = 1.Knowing God Christians believe that God acts in the world. They believe that God: came into the world as Jesus performs miracles answers prayers reveals Himself in dreams or visions reveals Himself directly through the Pope (Catholic belief) It is often said by Christians that God has shown us evidence of God's existence in the world in two main ways. SPECIAL REVELATION The Bible Miracles This says that God is directly revealed through the Bible, which is known as the written Word of God, and Jesus, who is called the living Word of God. The Bible is the primary source of information about God. Without the Bible Christians believe they would know little about how God wants people to live and who God is. This is because they believe that humans have lost their special relationship with God in the past, known as the Fall (see Genesis 3:1-24 for the Bible's account of what happened). Also, without the Bible Christians say we would not know about Jesus who is the other way God has been directly made known to us. Jesus is often called the living Word of God because we can see the way God wants us to live in the way he spoke and acted. Here are two quotes from the Bible about God's special revelation to humanity: 'All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.' (2 Timothy 3:16) [The word 'rebuking' means to tell off and 'righteousness' means right-living] 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God, and the Word was God... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.' (John 1:1, 14) [These verses tell us about the incarnation. The 'Word' here refers to Jesus.] Christians believe that the Bible is the source of authority for Christians because it is the Word of God – it contains the truths of God. Most Christians agree that the Bible reveals: how God has acted in the world how God wants people to live their lives what God is like However Christians do not agree on whether the Bible is literally God’s words or not. There are a variety of interpretations of the Bible: Literalist or Fundamentalist – The Bible is the direct world of God, dictated to writers as if by a heavenly voice. Everything in the Bible is literally true e.g. God created the world in 6 days. Conservative – The Bible was inspired by God but not dictated word for word – the writers own interests and thoughts also come through. Readers need to use their own intelligence and the guidance of the Holy Spirit/Church in order to understand the writers’ intentions. Most common view among Christians. e.g. the Creation story in Genesis is a myth to express religious truths about God. This view would accept miracles such as the Resurrection etc Liberal – The Bible was written by people would felt that they had a special understanding of God’s message. Pretty much everything in the Bible can be interpreted symbolically. It needs to be reinterpreted in light of modern understandings of the world. This position would not accept miracles. SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT 2) GENERAL REVELATION This says that God is indirectly revealed through nature, which gives some evidence that there is a God, and our conscience, which prompts us to live the way God wants us to even though we might never have read the Bible or heard of Jesus. Nature is an indirect source of knowledge about God when people consider where everything came from and how things fit together. Although science may give reasons for how the world and the universe came about, Christians believe it is only God who can explain why everything is here. This is shown in the arguments for the existence of God: The Cosmological Argument and the Teleological (Design) Argument. Here are two quotes from the Bible about God's general revelation to humanity: 'The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands... There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard' (Psalm 19:1, 3) 'When [those] who do not have the law, do by nature things required of the law... they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.' (Romans 2:14-15) [The 'law' is the Torah (Jewish religious law) found in the Old Testament. The words highlighted show that the Apostle Paul, who also wrote these words, is saying that even though people may not have read the Torah, they are prompted by their conscience to live good lives.] Religious Experience– Definitions to know Miracle An interruption of the laws of nature, such that can only be explained by divine intervention (the work of God). Numinous The feeling you get when you enter beautiful places, a feeling of awe and wonder, a feeling that there is something greater than you which you can only call God Conversion The feeling that there is something inside you wanting you to change your life and be more committed to God Prayer Communication with God – actually speaking to God Mystical Experience An experience where you feel you have been in contact with God in a special way.
