[5] Prejudice versus Discrimination… THE KEY DISTINCTION: Prejudice means pre-judgement Taking a dislike to a person for no good reason or making a judgement before you know all the facts To take action because of this prejudice is known as discrimination To think that women are inferior to men is a prejudice known as sexism To then treat women badly because of this is discrimination ATTITUDES TOWARDS WOMEN Speaking about God Throughout the history of the Church there has been a tendency to speak about God as 'He'. Jesus also famously told his disciples to pray 'Our Father'. Furthermore, Jesus as the incarnation of God (or the human presence of God on earth), was also a man. However, in recent years there has been much debate about this, particularly where we see that the Bible tells us that God is a spirit (John 4:24) and that God created both men and women in God's image (Genesis 1:27). Some have suggested that to speak about God only as a 'He' is to ignore the idea that God can be spoken of in other ways as well. It also suggests that women can only relate to God on male-terms which some of them might find difficult to do. Women who have had an abusive relationship with their Father or any other male-figure may find calling God 'Father' or 'He' a real problem. This is a controversial issue and far from being resolved amongst Christians (and even those in other religions). Jesus and women Jesus did not show sexist behaviour. He preached to women as well as men (Luke 10:38-42), revealed himself as saviour to a Samaritan woman (John 4:7-30), had women disciples and after the resurrection appeared first to a woman (Matthew 28:1-10). Christians believe, and Jesus said, that God created all people equal. The church and sexism Like all institutions that are dominated by men, the church has been guilty of sexism. Women have had little to do with the power in the church, even though they have traditionally made up the majority of the members. God is assumed to be a man and still in most churches women cannot rise to the highest positions. Feminist Theology Over the last few years a new force has arisen in the Christian church which is sometimes called feminist theology. Feminist theology began in the 1960s and has grown in strength. Women are slowly beginning to make the church think again about its male dominated language and sexist attitudes. It is only recently that some Christian denominations allow women priests or ministers (e.g. Church of England; Methodist church). Some remain opposed to this (e.g. Roman Catholic Church). Some Christians believe that women are second to men, that men should lead and women should follow (see 1 Timothy 2:8 – 15). Roman Catholics believe that because Jesus was a man and that a Priest represents Jesus as a teacher, it should be only men who represent Jesus. Roman Catholics believe women have other important jobs in the Christian church, such as raising children in the Christian faith. MEN ARE SUPERIOR TO WOMENMEN AND WOMEN ARE EQUAL BUT DIFFERENTMEN AND WOMEN ARE TOTALLY EQUAL‘Woman should be silent in church’ ‘Women cannot have authority over men’ ‘Wives should submit to their husbands’ ‘Adam was created first’ ‘It wasn’t Adam who was deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and broke god’s law’ All of these were said by St PaulJesus chose men to form the college of the 12 apostles – the ordination of women is therefore not possible This is the view of the Roman Catholic ChurchIn Genesis both male and female are created in the image of God’ ‘There is no difference between Jew and gentile… between men and women, all are one in Christ’ Jesus had women followers and whilst the Bible makes the point that the disciples didn’t question why the women should be allowed to speak with Jesus. The women stayed at the cross whilst the men fled – Jesus first appeared to women following his resurrection. Racism is treating people differently because of the race or culture to which they belong. In the last 500 years the 'white' race conquered and occupied much of the world and saw the people that they defeated as heathens and as inferior. One of the things that was considered inferior was their religion and following on after the soldiers came the missionaries. Over the last 50 years there has been a growing awareness by the western Christian church that racism has been part of its history. Jesus Christ came from the Middle East yet in western Christian art is nearly always portrayed as a white man. This imagery has been used by some to promote white supremacy. The church has thus begun to teach about equality and to offer security against discrimination, especially in its teachings about equality and forgiveness. Christians believe that God created all humans in his image, and thus all humans are bound together as equals in the sight of God. For Christians one of the reasons for the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus was the uniting of all peoples. "For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptised into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. " Paul's letter to the Galatians 3:26-28 “Every human being created in the image of God is a person for who Christ died. Racism, which is the use of a person's racial origin to determine their value, is an assault on Christ's values and a rejection of his sacrifice” World Council of Churches (1980) There are no divisions in the argument about racism for the churches. All the churches now agree that to discriminate against people on the grounds of their racial origin is wrong, and contrary to the law of God. Many people have fought against racial discrimination in both the church and society, Martin Luther King (USA black rights), Archbishop Desmond Tutu & Trevor Huddleston (South Africa apartied). From other people there are also lessons to be learnt, from Gandhi comes the idea of non-violent protest and from the Holocaust there are many lessons to be learnt. To be Christian one should not just be non-racist but anti-racist. On the 22nd of April 1993 Stephen Lawrence was killed in a racist attack, here is part of a testimony from three of his friends who are Christians; "We cannot begin to express the feelings that we have experienced from that day onwards, both individually and as a group. The events of that day have shaped our lives. Things that were once so important now seem trivial in comparison. Now we can concentrate on what we would normally be the most important aspects of our lives, like education and exams, when one of our friends has been murdered because of the colour of his skin... Is it really only the few who commit the act of murder who are at fault? It is us who built the world that we live in... This is what we have done with God's free will" RACISM: KEY TERMS: PREJUDICE: DESCRIMINATION: RACISM: HOLOCAUST: SLAVERY: EQUALITY: REASONS FOR RACISM IN CHRISTIANITY: CHRISTIAN PEOPLE WHO HAVE FOUGHT AGAINST RACISM (research some details on these people and their work) : - PERSON: detail: - PERSON; detail: THE ATTITUDE OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH TOWARDS RACISM: QUOTES TO SUPPORT THE CHRISTIAN ATTITUDE TOWARDS RACISM: - - - CHRISTIAN ATTITUDES TO OTHER FAITHS EXCLUSIVISMINCLUSIVISMPLURALSIMOnly Christians can go to heaven Jesus said I am the way the truth and the light. None goes to the father except through me. If we live our neighbour as ourselves if we don’t try to convert others we are condemning them to hell. All religions can help people come to God But only Christianity contains the whole truth. This is the view held by the Roman Catholic Church since 1964All religions lead to God There are many paths to the same summit (peak of a mountain) Jesus never tried to convert the Jews in his society Jesus said ‘ there are many rooms in my fathers house’ – this is interpreted to mean there are places for people of all religions PLURALIST Christians believe that there are ‘many ways to climb a mountain’. They believe that everyone who is genuinely trying to follow God is doing the right thing and may be achieve salvation. EXLUSIVIST Christians believe that only Christianity is the one true religion, all other religions are false. They believe that other religions should convert to Christianity. Many such Christians travel abroad as Missionaries. Missionaries travel abroad with the aim of converting non-Christians so that they may achieve salvation through Christ. CMS is a voluntary group of mainly Anglican Christians who want to follow Jesus’ command to ‘Go forth to every part of the world and proclaim the Good News to the whole creation.’ (Mark 16:15) Founded in 1799, CMS today has about 200 mission partners working in 60 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. They support people and projects engaged in evangelism, healthcare, training and education, and share the love of Jesus with people of all nationalities and religions. CMS is one of the largest mission agencies in the UK with offices in London, Singapore, Nairobi and Kampala. Other Christians, such as EVANGELICALS try to persuade non-Christians to convert to Christianity by distributing leaflets or visiting people in their homes. In every branch of the Church there are people who believe that their way is the only right way to worship. They think that other Christian denominations are wrong.. However, some INCLUSIVIST Christians try to unite all the different denominations. This is called the ECUMENICAL MOVEMENT. A BENEFIT OF PLURALISM IN MODERN DAY ENGLAND: FORGIVENESS AND REDEMPTION Key Idea: "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us" "Forgive us our sins", Jesus taught his followers to pray, "as we forgive those who had sinning against us." Bitterness, being unable to forgive, destroys people from the inside. Forgiving someone is not the same as saying that they did not do it, or letting people walk all over you, but it is important. In 1986 Jill Saward was the victim of rape when she was viciously assaulted in her vicarage home. Here are some words about her attack. "All I can do is to pray that they will be healed, not just physically, but from all the things in the past that have led them to act the way that they did ... I had a dream back in the summer that I was asked to help with the rehabilitation with one of them. My first reaction was, 'No, I couldn't handle it.' but when I was thinking about it afterwards I realised that they could repent and turn round. All this has taught me in a special way that no-one is beyond the scope of God's love" Lord Longford was a Christian who died a few years ago. He spent a large majority of his life campaigning for the release of the Moors murdered Myra Hindley, and as a result of this action was asked if was going to visit the murderer Rosemary West. He replied, "I'll go if I am asked and I imagine that Rosemary West knows that by now. No one is irredeemable or unforgivable. You must hate the sin and love the sinner”. Christians believe that people can forgive because God forgives us. In some extraordinary way Jesus' death on the cross has made this forgiveness possible. People can have a right relationship with God. They can stop worrying about whether they are 'good' enough for God. They can be set free: free to love, free to forgive and free to be truly human. Jesus' teachings on forgiveness: "You have heard it said, 'Love your neighbour and hate your enemy, but I say to you Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:43-44 Jesus also stopped the stoning of a woman caught in adultery and said to those who were stoning her: "Let you who is without sin cast the first stone" - John 8:7 Jesus taught that people have to be ready to forgive but also that they have to able to accept forgiveness To accept forgiveness I have to admit that I've done something wrong. I have to be sorry and to want to change my attitude (even if it takes more than one attempt). I also need to try to repair the damage that my wrong actions have caused (if possible). In the Roman Catholic Church if a person goes to confession they have to be ready to make amends before the priest will pronounce God's forgiveness (absolution). Penitence Christians are taught that being sorry for their sins and asking for God's forgiveness are an important part of life. In reciting the Lord's Prayer they say: 'Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.' Admitting sin and asking God's forgiveness through prayers of confession are also part of many church services, including the Eucharist. Key idea: Forgiveness offers the possibility of two types of peace: peace of mind - the potential healing of old emotional wounds, and peace with others Those who have studied it can tell you without qualification that forgiveness is a sign of strength. "Forgiveness is the key that can unshackle us from a past that will not rest in the grave of things over and done with.
