Views From Our Study - Challenges Galore

Year 6 exams are over, year 11 mock exams are over, and school life has regained some normalcy again. This week has seen several trips, several inter-house challenges, and more.

Geography Trip for Year 9

First up – a group of year 9 geographers enjoyed a fun-filled trip to the Royal Geographical Society. The “Going Places with Geography” event had them taking part in a number of workshops led by the society’s geography ambassadors, who are currently studying geography at university. We hope the inspirational sessions gave students a glimpse of the variety of places geography studies could take them in the future!

The National Gallery for Art Historians

On Tuesday, year 7 and sixth-form art historians were accompanied by Mrs Hunt, Miss Davidson, Miss Crawley, and Mrs Garcia de Bustos to the National Gallery to explore relationships between image, content, materials, processes, and symbolism across art from 1200 to 1900. In the morning, students were guided by curators around the galleries, encouraged to focus on the ideas conveyed in specific paintings from the collection and to examine aspects of the works in greater detail.

After lunch, they visited the Reflections: Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites exhibition. The exhibition focuses on one of the National Gallery’s most renowned treasures, Van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait 1434. The piece was purchased by the Gallery in 1842 and inspired a group of young students from the Royal Academy Schools, who occupied the East wing of the Gallery building at the time. Olivia and Julia wrote a lovely account here.

Challenges Galore

We’ve had several exciting inter-house challenges take place during lunchtimes this week.

The Engineering Challenge was truly a challenge for girls – in their groups of four, students were given four pieces of string, a rubber band, and a stack of plastic cups. Without touching the rubber band or the cups, they had to innovatively find a way to create a pyramid of cups two layers deep, with a final cup turned upright, filled with water, and balanced on the top!

The first part was the hardest – trying to work out the method. Once they’d managed that, it was a question of carrying out an impressive balancing act. On Wednesday, Canterbury was the first house to decipher the method. However, some setbacks at the last minute – namely Emma B in year 10 knocking over the pyramid – left Santiago the winners.
A fun and ambitious challenge! Thank you to Mr Robertson for coordinating.

The MFL Challenge took place today and involved a quiz on Spanish, German, and French general knowledge. Questions varied from how many languages are spoken in Spain, to which mountain region lies on the border between France and Spain. Well done to Canterbury for being crowned champions!

Iceland Trip

A group of students are lucky enough to be in Iceland at the moment – an amazing opportunity for the girls! We’ll hear a full report from Miss Wijay, Mr La Frenais, and Miss Hollobon next week. For now, here are some snaps of the teachers and students enjoying the natural beauty of this incredible country, including a special trip to Blue Lagoon!

Wellbeing Week

Next week is Wellbeing Week. We have organised a variety of extracurricular activities for students to enjoy throughout the week, with the aim of promoting ideas for healthy living and wellness. A full timetable is attached.
During this period, the wellbeing clubs will replace normal lunchtime clubs - with the exception of Dakoda's Dance Academy and LAMDA classes.
We would also like to take this opportunity to remind you of the parent talk we will be holding next Wednesday, as part of Wellbeing Week. Nihara Krause, a successful clinical psychologist, will be giving a talk on the subject of resilience and young people's mental health on Wednesday 24th January at 4:30 PM in school. We hope to see many of you there.
