Antony Gormley at the Royal Academy

Sixth-form art and textiles pupils attended a private view of Anthony Gormley’s show at the Royal Academy. Gormley’s work focuses on the body in space, both his own body and the viewer’s body.

We were fascinated to find that the show was the heaviest the Royal Academy has ever mounted – each of Gormley’s iron figures weigh over five tonnes. Even seemingly simple works required significant engineering to accommodate in the building. The three iron rods that represent the three planes of space are under such tension to keep them straight that the outer walls, floor, and ceiling had to be reinforced!
